How to Create a Custom Seamless Background
1. You need a graphics tool to create your pattern, and fortunately, there are some very easy-to-use free options. You don’t have to be a Photoshop wizard to make this happen! Create an account on Canva or Stencil if you don’t have one yet. Both have free plans that are more than enough. Canva is a powerful well known tool but we find Stencil is what we use. We have done this in Canva as it’s popular, but the ideas work for any program.
2. Open a blank canvas.
3. Search or upload elements you wish to add to your background design eg: flowers, plants, and elephants. You’ll be able to find all kinds of elements to add to create the perfect background.
Note: in Canva, make sure you are using free elements only! If you don’t want to pay for the pro version. In Canva the ones with crowns are not for free.
4. The key layout concept, split up your main graphics into halves! The reason most first attempts don’t work is this simple idea. Don’t place your main graphic in the middle and leave all clear edges, visually slice it up.
Add the elements on the canvas and arrange them on one side making the half of it cut off and copy the same to the other side also with the half of it cut off, make sure they are symmetrical and correctly cut off to ensure a seamless pattern. You can click ctrl+c and ctrl+v on the element to copy it or you can hold the alt button and drag it.
5. Add more elements as you want, keeping in mind the ‘use the edges’ idea.
6. You can make some elements bigger, or smaller, tilt, or rotate them to occupy the white spaces and make the design look fuller. This also ensures that your baby shower background will be different from all others, with nothing else quite like it out there, even if someone used the same elements.
7. You can also change the background color. Click the canvas, then the background color changer.
8. When done, you can download your newly created design.
9. Important! It’s impossible to know if it’s a seamless pattern until you check. Expect to go back and forth a bit your first time.
To check if the design you have created is seamless, you can use free websites like https://www.pycheung.com/checker/ or https://tile.toyls.com/ and just drag and drop your pattern in, no signups are required!
10. If you see misalignments like below, it’s not seamless yet, you can go back to your design and adjust them accordingly.
